We’ve covered The Game Awards at length here on the site. However, one thing we didn’t talk about was how in order to make room for all the game trailers, acceptance speeches were cut short. Even the Game of the Year winner, Larian Studio’s Baldur’s Gate 3 couldn’t have a moment to shine. I think that’s too bad given its boss was absolutely shining that night.

Swen Vincke, dressed in armor that night, got up on stage to only have 30 seconds before he was rudely interrupted. I mean, I guess we needed to see the orchestra with the fully animated flutist. He wasn’t the only one, but with the award was the last one, why not let it go?

The Speech

That didn’t stop Vincke, though. He took to Twitter to share the whole speech with the world.

Winning Game of the year is a great honour and I want to first thank everyone that voted for us and I want to congratulate all the other nominees. This has been an incredibly competitive year and you each would have deserved to win this award.”

Swen Vincke via Twitter

He singles out Capcom and Remedy for their GOTY nominees, Resident Evil 4 and Alan Wake 2, respectively. Then, The Game Awards was given praise “for creating an award show so big that it gets mainstream attention.” I mean, it got attention, but not for the things it was hoping for.

Vincke then thans the Baldur’s Gate 3 community, the dev team, and the over 2,000 people credited on the game. He specifically mentions the QA, localisation, customer support, operations, publishing, and playtesting teams. I’m glad to see this because a lot of these folks would have gone unnoticed otherwise. They are usually also the first jobs to get cut.

Baldur’s Gate 3 wouldn’t exist without you and you all deserve to be very proud of this.”

Swen Vincke via Twitter

There were mentions of his father passing before the game hit early access in 2020 and Jim Southworth, Larian’s lead cinematic animator who passed recently.

The Dungeons & Dragon team was also mentioned. For those who don’t know, Dungeons & Dragons is published by Wizards of the Coast. Wizards of the Coast is owned by Hasbro. Hasbro recently suffered layoffs.

I’m really sorry to hear so many of you were let go. It’s a sad thing to realize that of the people who were in the original meeting room, there’s almost nobody left. I hope you all end up well.”

Swen Vincke via Twitter

He ended on this:

I want to end with a story of a conversation I had a long time ago with a publisher. He told me, luckily for them, games are driven by idealism. He meant it in an exploitative way but he was right.

Games are a unique art form, as important as books, music or movies. Many developers, myself included, make games because they love seeing others engage with their creations in a way only games can offer.

They don’t care that much about the money made beyond it being the fuel they need to create new and better games. It’s worth reminding everyone that fuel is but a means, not a goal. Whereto and how we journey are what matter and what we remember. Thank you.

Also, Baldur’s Gate 3 is now out on Xbox.”

According to Sony, the PS5 is selling like hotcakes. According to them, I should be able to walk into a store, pick one up, and enjoy all the latest games. I wouldn’t know. It’s been a while since I’ve been in a store. But I have seen a PlayStation 5 that’d I’d very much like to have and will never get a chance to own.

As you may or may not know, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) President and CEO Jim Ryan is retiring in March. However, on Thursday, his team had a party for him to say goodbye. They had cardboard cutouts of controllers. There were even cookies with Jim Ryan’s face on it.

But the dopest thing this dude got was a custom PS5 decked out in the classic PS1 greyscale. The controller that comes with it also has the PS1 color scheme. The kicker, though, is the cable end which was designed to look like a PS1 controller connector. Looking at the image closer, it appears to be only plugged into one USB-C port with the other covered by the plastic housing. That won’t be awkward at all when two controllers need to be used.

Thanks to the Global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lead, Yuichi Haga, for snapping the pics. Hopefully, he’ll get to go to The Game Awards next year.

I’m all for celebrating gaming as an artform and giving honors to the talented folks who make them. However, there’s something to be said when you don’t also acknowledge the rot that permeates throughout the industry. When great games underperform because of a lack of coverage. That snowballs into the studios making difficult decisions because projections weren’t met. Ultimately, these great creators lose jobs, benefits, and so much more. Therein lies The Game Awards with all the credit, but none of the blame.

Last Thursday night, The Game Awards aired and it was a “Who’s Who” of developers, publishers, and journalists with maybe some fans sprinkled about. Announcements were made, awards were handed out, insults were made.

So, let’s start with the good news.

Award Nominations and Winners

Of course, this year’s nominees were filled with heavy hitters for the most part. It’s hard to argue that 2023 was a big year for gaming. Nearly every month was filled with top tier releases from AAA to Indie (whatever that definition means to you). And it shows in this nomination breakdown.

Game Nominations

Baldur’s Gate 38
Alan Wake 28
Marvel’s Spider-Man 27
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom5

The Elephant in the Room

Now, while there was quite a lot to celebrate as evidenced by the list above, there was definitely something else that could have been mentioned but was just ignored by Geoff Keighley and The Game Awards. I’m talking about the staggering amount of jobs lost in 2023.

With so many games getting acclaim, it means others didn’t. And because of how everything turned out during the pandemic, I still look to Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, to explain how we got here. Every company grabbed up so much cheap capital. While some companies may have had amazing, lofty goals, some didn’t and through a whole bunch of money at problems. However, when those plans didn’t pan out, it meant developers getting the boot. All the while, those at the top still there, and probably even attended The Game Awards.

It is that time of year again where people start gathering they game of the year lists. Truth be told, Desk Chair Analysts might have some lists floating around next month. But, of course, everyone who anyone will be paying attention to The Game Awards.

Earlier today, they took to YouTube to announce the nominees for this year’s award show. And the usual suspects showed up to play.
