After Google laid off self hundred folks from its hardware and core engineering teams, maybe it was a bit hasty. Especially after an issue has cropped up on Pixel devices for the second time.
A lot of Google Pixel users have been reporting a storage issue with their phones. These issues seem to have cropped up after installing the January 2024 Google Play system update. It appears to affect data that is stored on internal storage. Users have reported app crashes, media playback not working, and even camera malfunctions.
Google has been made “aware of this issue and are looking into it” as told to 9to5Google. The issues that are being faced here are like the ones users faced with a multiple profile update bug in Android 14. This occurred back in October.
Reports from the bug seem to come from Pixel series 5, 6, 7, 8 along with the Fold. The only saving grace here is that the January Play update hasn’t been widely rolled out yet. Also, it doesn’t seem to be affecting every users who has applied it. Google has at least paused the January update so more users won’t inadvertently download it.
With an issue like this happening twice, maybe Google should have thought twice about letting some talented engineers go.
