Apple can and should do better.

It has taken some time, but the word “nerd” and nearly everything around it has kind of lost its sting. Granted, I’m no longer in grade school, so who knows if that holds true on the playground. But there is one kid in the UK who’s had enough of how Apple portrays nerds.

Teddy has started a petition to get Apple to change the “nerd face” emoji in their products. The emoji features the classic yellow smiley face wearing glasses and has its two front teeth protruding out its mouth.

Teddy states the emoji makes it “absolutely horrible for people wearing glasses.”

They’re making people think we’re nerds and it’s absolutely horrible. It’s making me feel sad and upset, and if I find it offensive there’ll be thousands of people around the world that find it offensive too.”

Teddy to the BBC

Teddy’s teacher, Lisa, inspired him to make the petition, saying “He’s quite vocal about it but in quite a grown-up way, and I think that should be supported, encouraged, and commended as well.”

While it is only circulating in Teddy’s school and town, here’s hoping it can get nationwide and global recognition.

Apple’s been fumbling a lot lately. This is an easy win!
