Sony has shared its quarterly results and they have some great news about the PlayStation 5. It appears they were able to sell 4.9 million units during its second financial quarter. So, as of September 30, they have sold a total of 46.6 million consoles. While it’s still not holiday 2022 numbers, it still managed to get 1.6 million consoles sold than this time last year.
The main reason for the climb is that Sony couldn’t keep up with the demand for the system due to supply chain issues. I personally believe that the scalping market was still affecting sales at the time. It just wasn’t as big as it was at the beginning of the system’s launch.
Sony still has its work cut out for it. It has a sales target of shipping 25 million consoles by the end of the financial year. In order to reach it, it will need to sell 16.8 million more consoles. This might not be easy as Sony only sold 19.1 million PlayStation 5s last year.
Sony President Hiroki Totoki believes they can do it. According to Reuters, Totoki is confident it is a goal that Sony “can attain very easily.” He might be looking at the upcoming PS5 slim models to boost sales this holiday.
Hardware sales aside, Sony has also sold 67.6 million games during the second quarter. Only 4.7 million of those were first-party titles. Higher numbers are expected next quarter as Spider-Man 2 sold 5 million copies in its first 11 days.
