Since the announcement of the redesigned PlayStation 5 systems, information about them are trickling out. One such trickle has people (including myself) a little worried.

If you opt for the digital only model of the PS5, you have an option later on to add a disc drive to the system for $80. It seems, however, that you may need to be connected to the internet in order to install it to your system.

Images online have shown the warning “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup” on the side of the box.

Now, this could be to make sure that you have an officially licensed add-on attached to your system instead of a device that could allow pirates to do their thing.

For something to allow you to play offline, Sony really wants to make sure you have a connection handy anyway.

If anything, it makes it real difficult to be able to use the drive when needed. As someone who is often playing games in spaces with limited networking, this will become a pain to try to get working on short notice.

Hopefully, more information will be provided about the disc drive soon.
